The Story

Everything has began in the far 1205...

The great latin emperor Boudewijn IX earl Flandrasky was coming back from his last march, witch was started to ensure coffee deliveries from the near East. Because the knight`s armors were too heavy they needed a lot of energy to be able to carry them on. This is the reason having often deliveries of fresh coffee was of great importance to the warriors.

Let`s go back to the story. Going through border post at Malko Tarnovo, Boldewin "forgot" to declare the coffee to the authorities, trying to unsuccessfully cover it under packages of cocaine. The fraud was noticed by a border post agent (they say that was the father of the future king Ivaylo) and the coffee was taken away. The right hand of the emperor – Count Yan 1 Cappuchin (we suppose the Cappuccino was called in his name) tried to defend his master by finding couple famous lawyers.

Despite everything both of them were transferred in the capital Tarnovo with very high security. The wife of King Kaloyan was very interested in them. In the matter of fact, some say that the coffee aroma, very noticeable every morning, was the blame for her interest.

Boldewin died in very ridiculous way - he fell out of the window, trying to get water from Yantra river to prepare the morning coffee. Over the years the legend changes and they say there was a guard who pushed the emperor after arguing which brand of coffee is more aromatic and refreshing. After failing couple of times Yan Cappuchin finally escaped the prison in October 1208. He recruited in his country for a while and then continued to travel through Europe and made coffee vary popular all over it.

And now, 800 years after those events, we gratefully remember him and his fight, having a sip of aromatic coffee.
